Meet Maverick, The Yak, Don Kwelu, and Justin Credible AKA JC. They are the creators of the web series Brothers With No Game. These friends joined forces on what started out as a lonely Valentine’s Day and turned into what their website calls a “valentine’s day is a false prophecy created to boost women’s egos give florists a reason to own a shop” rant. These four gentlemen have taken their dating hits and misses and turned them into internet gold. Here are some of their thoughts on filmmaking.

What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
As a collective we had always been inspired as content creators first, whether it was through articles/blogs/songwriting/poetry, digital presentation or music, we always sort to create and edutain. As an individual myself (JC), my first inspiration to be a filmmaker of some kind came from a project I did in college. My group was assigned to make the opening 5 minutes to a movie. After we had completed the project, we received an honorary grade and the examiner kept the project for future students. That inspired me to keep on the creative path.
If you had to choose, what is your absolute favorite film and why?
JC: Strangely enough Forest Gump; it seemed like the longest film of all time when I first viewed it, and as a youngster it took a lot to hold my attention, so the fact that I was able to sit through and enjoy this movie, I knew it was something special. Most movies’ sole purpose are to entertain for a couple of hours, and are a true definition of a ‘flick’; whereas Forest Gump was very much a story and journey that I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish.
Don: The Matrix, I love the way it captures and combines facts, philosophy, action and drama all in one. You can watch it purely as an action film or purely as philosophy, that aspect about it fascinated me.
The Yak & Maverick: Coming to America. I don’t think we have laughed so much in our entire lives watching one movie. Definitely one of the comedy greats and the balance of humour and love was just right. I think to make such an epic out of a random concept such as ‘An African Prince going to Queens, New York to find a bride by pretending to poor’ is a huge feat. Absolute Classic.
In your opinion, what is the most challenging thing about film making?
In our experience so far, the most challenging thing about filmmaking is trying to be as complimentary to the script as possible. When your budget is low or your dealt with circumstances such as lighting, weather and lack of resources it’s tough to bring the script to life how you envisioned it. That is definitely the most challenging thing about filmmaking, making every scene count.
To you, what is the most rewarding thing about the film making process?
The most rewarding thing about the filmmaking process is bringing ideas to life through creative and hard work. It’s a great feeling to see what you have written, directed and/or produced in it’s completion and on screen, and an even better feeling to have thousands of people enjoy and appreciate it. It is still surreal to this day.
What do you see for your future in film making?
As an individual (JC) I see myself bringing more ideas to life via the web, TV and film. Brothers With No Game: The Web Series is essentially my first real venture into this world and I like what I see. Its just a case of now breaking down more doors and barriers with continuous original and creative content and I plan to do so.
What advice would you give to a new filmmaker who wants to know where to start?
Watch, Read, Create & Then Do. Apply that in any way you want, the most important thing is to end up ‘doing’ something.
